Common Questions
Bristol Drum Lesson Queries
WHO ARE YOU AND WHY SHOULD I TRUST YOU?
My name’s Joe and I’m a professional session drummer from the UK. I’ve been playing drums for almost 20 years and have a degree in Professional Musicianship. I now have over 15 years professional playing experience including numerous live tours and recording tracks that have been played on BBC Radio 1. I have a full DBS/CRB background check and almost 7 years of teaching a wide range of ages and playing abilities.
DO YOU TEACH COMPLETE BEGINNERS?
Yes! I’ve had many students who have never hit a drum kit before that have gone on to study music at college and play live with bands. Whatever your goals and current playing ability – I can help. I don’t believe in “natural talent” or “sense of rhythm”. Drumming and music is a learned skill and you can learn it too.
AM I TOO OLD TO START LEARNING TO PLAY THE DRUMS?
NO! You can never be too old to start learning to play the drums. Learning an instrument offers numerous benefits regardless of age, including cognitive, emotional, and physical advantages. It’s honestly never too late to pursue a passion or hobby, learn a new skill and have fun.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE THAT OTHERS ARE MISSING?
Drum lessons at Bristol Rock Centre mean you get to play on a real drum kit in a dedicated, purpose built teaching studio. This means there are no loud bands practicing in the room next door which is common when lessons are held in public rehearsal studios. We have a secure building with public liability insurance and fully DBS/CRB checked staff. There’s free parking right outside the building and no stairs to contend with.
In addition to teaching drum lessons, Bristol Rock Centre also provides tutoring in guitar, bass, vocals, and music production and regularly puts on events and workshops for students to get in to bands where they can get some real world experience playing with other musicians.
HOW DO I BOOK A LESSON WITH YOU?
Simply send me a message from the contact form below or you can contact via the Bristol Rock Centre website.
I CAN’T MAKE MY LESSON! WHAT’S THE CANCELLATION POLICY?
Please give 2 days notice if you need to cancel a lesson. Cancellations made the day before a lesson may incur a £10 fee. Cancellations made the same day as the lesson may cost you the full price of the lesson (at our discretion). Please note that a cancellation is not the same as rearranging, so you can move your lesson to a different day or time without a charge.
Don't trust a teacher who makes it difficult to see examples of their playing...
During your drum lessons, you should play more than your teacher. However, there are many so-called “teachers” out there who suspiciously have no proof that they can actually play the drums.
The video below was recorded and filmed in the same room on the same drum kit that your in-person Bristol drum lessons take place – all in one take with no cuts or edits.
